Roseville, California – January 14th, 2025- We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by the devastating California wildfires. The hardships caused by these events are immense, and we want to assure you that we stand with you and your loved ones during this challenging time.
As your trusted insurance partner, we are committed to helping you navigate the recovery process. If you or someone you know has experienced personal loss or property damage, the following steps can provide guidance:
ESSENTIAL STEPS TO TAKE AFTER A LOSS
- Reach Out to Your Insurance Provider
Start by requesting a complete copy of your homeowner’s insurance policy, including the declarations page that details your coverage. Insurers are required by the California Department of Insurance to provide this at no cost within 30 days of your request. Review your policy to understand coverage for rebuilding, personal property replacement, and additional living expenses (ALE). - Document All Damages
Before beginning any cleanup efforts, thoroughly document the damage to your property with photos and videos. Create an inventory of all damaged or lost belongings, as this will be crucial when filing your claim. - Track Your Additional Living Expenses (ALE)
If you’ve been displaced, keep records of temporary housing, food, and other necessary expenses. Policies must provide ALE coverage for a minimum of 24 months, with potential extensions up to 36 months depending on circumstances. - Maintain Detailed Records
Keep a “claim diary” to document all communications with your insurer and adjuster. Note dates, times, and summaries of discussions. Save receipts for expenses related to replacing personal items like clothing or toiletries. These records will ensure clarity and accountability throughout the claims process. - Seek Assistance and Ask Questions
California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara encourages policyholders to stay informed. For help understanding your policy or navigating the claims process, contact the Department of Insurance Hotline at 800-927-4357.
TIPS FOR A SMOOTH CLAIM PROCESS
- Get Professional Estimates
Obtain at least one estimate from a licensed contractor to compare with your insurer’s assessment. The Department of Insurance offers tools to verify contractors and avoid scams. - Exercise Caution
Be wary of rushing into agreements with public adjusters or contractors. Ensure you fully understand any contracts before signing. Public adjusters must be licensed and are prohibited from soliciting business until seven days after a disaster. See the full Department of Insurance Declaration of Emergency HERE.
