AHIP Certification 2021 FAQ

What is AHIP certification?

There are rules in place for brokers who offer Medicare health insurance. These rules protect consumers from unethical insurance marketing practices. AHIP certification is proof that you have completed training and you know how to sell plans in a way that is compliant with CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). Most carriers will require this certification if you want to legally sell Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plans. Because the regulations can change from year to year, Medicare market agents are required to renew their certification every year.

What are the AHIP Certification Requirements?

The test is an open book test with 50 questions that you can take online here. You only have 2 hours to complete the test and you must pass both parts of the test with a score of 90% or higher. You will have 3 attempts to pass the test.
Once your certification is completed, you must upload it to the website of each carrier you would like to work with. Keep in mind the carrier will normally have other carrier-specific training required in order to sell their products.

What is the AHIP Certification Cost?

While the test normally costs $175, many carriers offer discounts on AHIP if you take the test through their broker portal. Agents contracted with Trusted American Insurance Agency receive a discount on certification or, in some cases, reimbursement. If you are not yet contracted with us, you can get started here.

Is there an AHIP Certification Deadline?

Technically, there is no deadline to complete certification. However, AHIP certification training is often the first step to most carrier certifications. So, in order to be ready to sell, you’ll want to complete certification as soon as possible. You can take the test as early as June 22, 2020.
